AI doesn’t write essays for you — but it dramatically speeds up every stage of the process: planning your argument, structuring your points, refining your writing, and polishing your conclusion. Here’s how to use it ethically and effectively.

Stage 1: Planning Your Argument (30 Minutes → 10 Minutes)

Once you have your question, use AI to map out possible arguments:

Essay question: [question]. Suggest 5 different approaches I could take to answer this. For each, outline the main argument, 3 supporting points, and any counterarguments I’d need to address.

Choose the approach that best fits your knowledge and the sources available. This replaces hours of staring at a blank page.

Stage 2: Creating an Outline

Once you’ve chosen your approach:

I’m going to argue that [thesis]. Create a detailed essay outline with: introduction, 4 body paragraphs (each with a main point, 2 pieces of evidence, and how they support the thesis), a counterargument paragraph, and a conclusion. This essay is for a [undergraduate / postgraduate] [subject] course.

This outline is your scaffold. You write the content — AI gives you the structure.

Stage 3: Writing First Drafts of Paragraphs

For each paragraph, write a rough version yourself first. Then use AI to improve it:

Improve this paragraph. The main point is [X]. Strengthen the argument, improve sentence flow, and make sure the point connects back to the thesis: [thesis]. Do not add new claims or citations I haven’t provided. Keep the same word count.

This way the ideas and evidence remain yours. The AI improves the expression.

Stage 4: Checking Your Argument

Before submitting, paste your full essay and ask:

Read this essay. Does the argument flow logically? Are there any unsupported claims? Does the conclusion follow from the evidence in the body? Is the thesis clearly answered? Point out the three weakest parts and suggest how to strengthen them.

Stage 5: Language and Style

For non-native speakers or those developing academic writing style:

Improve the academic register of these sentences. Make the language more formal and precise. Do not change the meaning or add new content: [sentences].

What Not to Do

Do not ask AI to write your essay from scratch and submit it. Detection tools (Turnitin AI, GPTZero) are increasingly effective, and more importantly, you learn nothing. The goal is to produce better, faster — not to avoid the intellectual work entirely.
