Installing an operating system via a USB stick is interesting, and is usually extremely easy. Here’s how to do it.

What you will need

You will need:

  1. A Macbook
  2. The complete macOS Ventura beta installer application
  3. A USB flash drive with 16GB or larger

To get the complete macOS Ventura beta installer applications, you must download the .pkg files from these 3 links, one is Beta 1, 2, and 3.

You can choose whichever you like, as the latest version will always be available in System Preferences when attempting a new software update. Once you have downloaded the file, run the pkg file. This will install the macOS Ventura installer from the official Apple website.

How to do it

Now that you have the macOS Ventura installer inside of your /Applications/ folder, you can make a bootable install disk from it.

  1. Open the Terminal
  2. Connect the USB you would like to turn into an installer
  3. Rename the USB to “VenturaUSB”. This is by personal preference, but to make these steps a lot easier, we advise you to rename the USB to this.
  4. Run the following command to turn the USB into a bootable installer. The command can vary with your USB name and macOS version.
macos ventura

macOS Ventura Public Beta:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Ventura\ beta.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/VenturaUSB --nointeraction

macOS Ventura Developer Beta 2 and newer:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Ventura\ beta.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/VenturaUSB --nointeraction

macOS Ventura Developer Beta 1:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ 13\ beta.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/VenturaUSB --nointeraction
  • Press return and enter the admin password, and let the Ventura installer be created.

Please note that only a Mac can be booted with this USB.

How to boot from the USB

Apple Silicon
  • Connect the USB drive to the Mac and reboot it.
  • Press and hold the power button until you see the startup options screen.
  • Choose the macOS Ventura USB as your boot volume.
Intel Mac
  • Connect the USB drive to the Mac and reboot it.
  • Press and hold to the Option key until you see the boot volumes available to boot up from.
  • Choose the macOS Ventura USB as your boot volume

After you have booted into the macOS Ventura installer, installing it is the same regardless of what device you are using.
