GitHub Copilot is the most-used AI coding tool in the world, with over 1.3 million paid subscribers. But most developers only use 20% of what it can do. This guide covers everything — from basic autocomplete to generating full test suites.

Setup and Configuration

Install the GitHub Copilot extension in VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, or Neovim. Sign in with GitHub. For best results, configure these settings:

  • Enable Copilot Chat for conversational code help
  • Set inline suggestions to trigger automatically
  • Turn on code completions for comments — this is where the magic happens

Writing Code with Comments First

The fastest way to use Copilot is the comment-first approach. Write a comment describing what you want, then let Copilot write the code:

// Function to validate UK postcode format and return true/false
// Accept both uppercase and lowercase input
// Handle spaces in the middle of the postcode

Press Enter and Copilot generates the function. Review, accept with Tab, move on. This works for 80% of routine coding tasks.

Generating Tests Automatically

Copilot is exceptional at writing tests. Open a function, then in the chat window type:

Write comprehensive unit tests for this function. Cover: happy path, edge cases, empty input, invalid types, and boundary conditions. Use [Jest / PyTest / JUnit].

For a typical function, Copilot generates 8–12 tests covering cases you would have missed. Review and run them immediately.

Code Documentation in Seconds

Highlight a function or class and ask Copilot Chat:

Write JSDoc documentation for this function. Include: description, @param with types, @returns, @throws, and a usage example.

What used to take 5 minutes now takes 10 seconds.

Refactoring Legacy Code

One of Copilot’s best use cases is cleaning up old code:

Refactor this function to: use async/await instead of callbacks, add proper error handling, extract magic numbers to named constants, and improve variable names. Explain each change.

Always read the explanation — Copilot sometimes makes assumptions that won’t fit your codebase.

Debugging with AI

Paste buggy code into Copilot Chat with:

This code throws [error message] when [condition]. Identify the bug, explain why it occurs, and provide a fix. Also check for any other potential issues.

Limitations to Know

Copilot has real limitations. It can confidently generate insecure code — always review suggestions involving authentication, SQL queries, and file operations. It also has a knowledge cutoff, so it may suggest outdated APIs or deprecated patterns. Treat it as a junior developer: fast and useful, but requires oversight.
